How To Design Your Art Studio

As a creative human, it’s essential to have a dedicated space to brainstorm, get inspired, store your supplies and merchandise and just to wake up and get yourself in the zone. I decided to turn one of the rooms into an @illustration_by_samridhi studio when we were renovating my house. and I have been living in my studio ever since.

Ā

Creating a Layout

I started by sketching out a few different layouts on paper and then settled on a layout that maximised the use of space, incorporated my furniture requirements and resembled my personal visual aesthetic.

I decided to place my work table in the center of the room, where I and my teammates/friends can sit around and work together. I placed a single bed in my studio for when I needed a break. And planned sockets and switched around the bed and work table.

I also created a separated storage wardrobe for my supplies and merchandise (stationary and gifting products), I chose sleek black cylindrical wardrobe door handles so they look like the ā€œuntitled brush strokeā€Ā

Designing The Overall Aesthetics

The whole vibe of a space is majorly the impacted by the colour of your walls, quality of the furniture and lighting. I wanted my studio to feel white and bright with only a touch of pastels is some areas. So I painted all the walls in white, except my backdrop mural which I hand painted in my illustration style. It is a turquoise wall with a drawing of a human hand holding a cloud that says ā€˜create’. It represents ā€˜holding on to your dream of creation’.

I placed two big colourful sitcom posters on the wall right opposite to the backdrop to visually balance colour and elements. Apart from illustrations, I tried to incorporate the shapes and stroke that I often use in my drawings to design my big wall mirror, restroom mirror, work bench and utility table.

How I painted my wall

Once I had the design ready, I started drawing a grid on the wall. With the help of that basic grid, I drew the whole sketch in pencil (had to use portable stairs to reach the ceiling height, tough task) Then I went to the paint store to get custom colour paint buckets and the ā€˜shade formula’ to mix to the hue and paint shadows.

I then began painting the blocks of colours using rollers on the most part and brushes to give a precise finish. After painting the base I added shadows and finished it all up with an outline. It took me a full week to complete this mural but am super happy with how it turned out.Ā

Adding Decoratives

To make the space more functional as well as pretty, I added objects like a black frame white board for brainstorming, a fabric pin board to display characters drawn by my community for me, an easel with a canvas and a couple of decoratives like pillows and blanket, a fragrance diffuser, a table lamp etc.

Long Story Short

Designing my art studio was a fun and rewarding experience that allowed me to create a space that was not only functional but also inspiring. By choosing the right space, creating a layout that worked for me, and adding personal touches, I was able to create a space that evidently reflects my personal visual style and allows me to create my best work.
